Basic Slovak Language for Foreigners

The subject is focused on mastering basic language skills in the target language. The student is able to understand frequently used everyday expressions and basic phrases and, according to the needs, is able to use them. He/she can read and understand simple text, create simple questions about basic needs and common topics. He/she is also able to respond to the questions while the person he/she is communicating with speaks slowly and clearly. Participants of the course will acquire very basic language skills corresponding to Level [lt] A1.
It is a one-term course. At the end of the course, an exam has to be taken. This subject is only for foreign students.
The Slovak and English languages are the target languages used for communication in the class.

Elementary Level

Intermediate Level

At the end of the course, the student is able to keep simply and effectively conversation in the Slovak language. He/she can introduce himself and simply describe his/her professional growth, e.g. during the job interview. From the aspect of written competencies, the student is able to write coherent sentences about everyday aspects of his/her life, e.g. work or study experience. He/she can write professional CVs and motivation letters. He/she can read and comprehend short texts with highly frequent vocabulary and can recognize basic information. As for listening comprehension, he/she can understand necessary basic information when produced in appropriate pace and in standard language. During both terms, with the general meaning of spoken language of neutral functional style, the student also acquires professional vocabulary of his professional field of study (approximately 100 words).

Advanced Level

At the end of the course, the student is able to participate at common conversation topics, e.g. a small talk with colleagues, make business appointments or have a telephone conversation. When reading and listening he/she can recognise main conclusions and argument line. In written production, he/she is able to keep private and business e-mail communication.
During both terms, with the general meaning of spoken language of neutral functional style, the student also acquires professional vocabulary of his/her professional field of study (approximately 150 words).
The course consists of the winter term and the summer term. At the end of the winter term, ´zápočet´ is required. At the end of the summer term, both ´zápočet´ and exam are required.

Slovak Language A

The aim of the subject is to develop the language skills in selected areas of human activity - developing and practicing communicative language competences by implementing specific language tools, four language skills and effective teaching methods. The students will understand the written texts as well as audio texts and will be able to select and process the basic information on a given issue. They will be able to conduct a dialogue in pairs or groups using the acquired basic professional vocabulary.
The course is intended only for foreign students. It can be completed only in winter term. At the end of the winter term, ´zápočet´ is required.

Slovak Language B

The aim of the subject is the development of language skills in selected areas of human activity with the focus on speaking as well as the selection of specific language tools and teaching methods leading to the effective acquisition of professional vocabulary.
The students will understand both the written texts and the audio texts and will be able to select and process the specific information on a given issue. They will be able to identify grammatical phenomena, synonyms and antonyms in specific texts. Moreover, they will be able to conduct a dialogue in pairs or groups using the acquired professional vocabulary as well as prepare a specific topic and present it individually.
The course is intended only for international students. The students are allowed to take the course only in the summer term after the successful completion of the course - Slovak Language A (completed by ´zápočet´). At the end of the summer term, both ´zápočet´ and an exam are required.

Slovak Language C

Students will be able to use vocabulary in the range of acquired communication situations and the thematic areas discussed during the course. They will be able to write an essay on topics related to Slovak studies, interpersonal relations, economics, social and cultural life, while combining and evaluating information and arguments from various sources.
The course is intended only for international students. Students are allowed to take the course only in the winter term. At the end of the winter term, ´zápočet´ is required.

Slovak Language D

At the end of the course, students will be able to read and understand texts on general topics and texts for specific purposes, to skim the texts and retell the main ideas in their own words. Students will be able to communicate in the target language, write their own text and include technical vocabulary in their writing. Students will also be able to express their opinion on general topics and topics connected with their fields of study.
The course is intended only for international students. The students are allowed to take the course only in the summer term after the successful completion of the course - Slovak Language C (completed by ´zápočet´). At the end of the summer term, both ´zápočet´ and an exam are required.

Language for Specific Purposes (Slovak)

At the end of the course, students will be able to use technical vocabulary in the written and oral communication within the academic and professional environment, to read authentic texts connected with their fields of study and to comment on the topical social and economic issues. Students will be able to communicate and write in the target language, and use technical vocabulary in their speaking and writing.
