Currently, the main activity of the Centre of Languages (CL) is focused on formal and informal education.
As for formal education at the CL, it is teaching English, German, Russian and Spanish, as well as Slovak for foreigners (from level A1 to level C1 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages [CEFR] with a focus on general and professional language) at all six faculties of SUA in Nitra and organizing language exams in the UNIcert® system.
Almost all courses are two-semester ones (2 hours /a week) and are completed with a credit in the winter semester and a credit and exam in the summer semester. For the students, who visit the university within the ERASMUS+ program, the course Basic Slovak Language for Foreigners (level [lt] A1) is designated. The course takes one semester and ends with a credit and exam. The detailed information about individual courses of the Centre of Languages is given in the section: Subjects.
The Centre of Languages provides university students with the opportunity to obtain an international certificate of their language skills. Since 2006, the CL at SUA in Nitra has been a member of the Institute for Accreditation of Language Teaching at Central European Universities UNIcert®LUCE with the right to provide language teaching and exams in accredited language programs that take into account the specifics and needs of students and graduates of non-philological universities and colleges. Participation in the UNIcert® exams is voluntary for university students and is preceded by thorough language preparation within accredited language programs.
CL employees also actively participate as members of committees in checking the language skills of applicants for doctoral studies at individual faculties of SUA in Nitra. The language admission process takes place in the form of a written test (grammar and reading comprehension), or in the form of an oral exam (presentation of the doctoral thesis topic).
Since the academic year 2023/2024, the Centre of Languages has responded to requests from students of SUA in Nitra regarding the need to test their language proficiency (level B2, English) for the purposes of studying abroad. The testing consists of two parts: (1) a written part - grammar and reading comprehension and (2) an oral part - a guided interview.
As part of their teaching activities, CL staff also engage in informal education, namely teaching in lifelong learning courses (courses for university employees and students, the public, as well as courses within the University of the Third Age and the Children's Summer University).
Regarding scientific research and publication activities, the teachers of the Centre of Languages focus on areas related to their professional specialization (e.g. compiling bilingual and multilingual terminological dictionaries, teaching materials for students of SUA in Nitra, etc.), publish the results of their scientific research activities and at the same time cooperate on translations of the outputs of scientific and pedagogical staff of SUA in Nitra.
